Get a Run for Your (Tuition) Money with Plex Group Fitness Classes

Boston College, as a student body, is pretty familiar with the benefits of exercise. Aside from keeping  weight in check, exercise increases the brain’s dopamine production, reduces stress, eases anxiety, increases energy levels and fights insomnia. Given all of these benefits, there really is no excuse not to exercise--especially when the Plex offers group fitness classes for free.

The vast amount of group fitness class options that the Plex offers--completely free of charge--is a pretty awesome perk of going to BC, and it would be a shame not to take advantage of it. Why pay $205 per month for a membership at Equinox when you can take all the classes you want at the Plex for free?

The following is a list of six group fitness classes offered at the Plex that are not only free, but are also challenging and rewarding:

1. BootyBarre

Barre is a ballet-inspired body workout. BootyBarre, on the other hand, takes it a step further and fuses Pilates, dance, yoga and other fitness techniques to create a fun and energetic workout that focuses on that BOOTY.

2. TBC Step

With TBC Step, you get a complete body workout that incorporates both cardio and strength training. The first half of the class is dedicated to cardio (using the steps), and the second half of the class is dedicated to strength training and abs (using a weight bar, weights, a mat, and a resistance band). While the class is challenging, the instructors' playlists are great and keep you motivated throughout the workout. After attending a minimum of six classes, you will definitely start to notice a difference in your body.

3. Ripped Ride

Is 45 minutes of exercise not enough for you? Unlike most fitness classes, Ripped Ride is a 70-minute class. The first 35 minutes of the class are spent in the spin room on the bike, and the second 35 minutes are spent on Court #10 for the strength-based portion. Don't worry--you will have a five minute break in between the two portions! However, since the number of bikes is limited, make sure to call the Plex to sign up in advance.

4. Fitlates

Formerly known as Power Pilates, Fitlates is a Pilates-inspired fitness class that focuses on the core, the glutes and the thighs. Fitlates is a mat-based workout where not much cardio is involved. If you're looking to build muscle tone, this is definitely a class for you!

5. Spin 45/60

Why spend $30 on class at SoulCycle when you can spin for free at the Plex? Spin classes at the Plex give you the option of cycling for either 45 or 60 minutes. Depending on what you are looking for in the class, there are a ton of instructors to choose from, and you are sure to find some favorites once you start attending them. Sometimes, they even offer themed rides, such as "Girl Power."

6. Total Body Sculpt

Do you like to alternate between cardio and strength training? Total Body Sculpt is the perfect class to take after a run around the Reservoir, or even after a spin class. This class will tone your muscles in no time.
