Make Hump Day Your New Favorite Weekday With Five Free Things to Do in Boston

Misleading R. Kelly lyrics aside, you don’t have to wait until the weekend to have yourself some fun. And despite what your friends at Northeastern and Boston University might tell you, you do go to school in Boston. So avoid having to tell your friends and family at the end of the semester that you did not get into the city as often as you would have liked. Instead, take advantage of the free amusement Boston offers this fall to get you through the week.

  1. Sunset Yoga | 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM | Fiedler Field, Charles River Esplanade

On Wednesday evenings, we can all use an opportunity to de-stress, rather than deteriorate by the time the weekend arrives. Refresh your mind and body to achieve the Zen you’ll need to power through a busy week. Suitable for all yogi levels.

The Harpoon-Brewery-sponsored Fall Music Series gives Boston students, including under-21s, a funky venue to witness local talent each week. While the jams are complimentary, you may feel temped to dip into your Franzia coin jar for a gourmet pizza at this much-loved Jamaica Plain staple.

  1. Sketching Class | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM | Museum of Fine Arts

Put your textbooks and calculators aside on Wednesday nights and instead pick up some drawing pencils over at the MFA. A drawing instructor will help you discover and build upon your artistic abilities as you sketch from live models or objects in the museum collections. What better way to release your mid-week angst than to get in touch with your artsy side and get your creative juices flowing?

  1. Open Mic Night | 8:00 PM – Midnight | Kings Back Bay Lounge

Whether you attend as a participant or as a spectator, spend your Wednesday night unwinding at an upscale, retro-themed bowling and entertainment restaurant with some jokes, tunes, poetry and magic tricks. And for those 21+ upperclassmen, take advantage of the late night deals at Kings’ full bar.

If you prefer exercise-induced endorphins to creative or leisure activities, head down Commonwealth Avenue on Wednesdays to replace your jaded Plex routine with an evening bike ride. Green Line Velo cycling team hosts group rides each Wednesday, so long as weather permits, for road bikers who want to workout amongst good company. And for those of us who require some kind of mouth-watering incentive, the team invites all participants out afterwards to consume their hard-burned calories at Otto Pizza.

So beat your Wednesday blues with an evening in Beantown, free of charge. Before you know it, you’ll be hearing “Ignition (Remix)” sounding throughout your hall as your neighbors commence the weekend.
