"How I Met Your Mother" Episode 23: Something Old

This week’s episode of How I Met Your Mother certainly had its ups and downs. Sensitive Ted was more sensitive than ever and we even got a glimpse of quite an emotional Robin. Daddy issues will do that to her.

I first want to address Lily and Marshall’s move to Rome. For the past three episodes or so, this move has gone on and off of our radar, but the two are finally starting to pack. Call me crazy, but I can’t help feeling that there will be an impending conclusion of some external factor that ultimately prevents Lily and Marshall from moving to Rome. Cliché, yes, but do we put it past the writers? I’m not so sure about that. This whole ordeal has been too casual and – you heard it here first – I’m calling that something is up.

Apparently Ted has a reputation as an amazing packer and de-clutterer now? He really just knows how to make us swoon. I always love a good College Ted cameo, so I was pleased with the throwback to College Ted’s time in Spain where the Spaniards called him “Fanny Pack Dork,” but in Spanish, of course. I wish I could say I’m surprised that Ted likes fanny packs, but it doesn't surprise me at all. Not even a little bit. Anyway, typically, Ted begins to get attached to the so-called sentimental items that Marshall and Lily want to throw in the Bermuda Triangle (aka their front curb where everything disappears). Cue brief sob story of Ted’s woes about losing Lily and Marshall’s friendship when they move abroad and you get classic Ted. Sorry, but you have all been friends since college. I think you’ll make it.

Robin, on the other hand, has her own cry fest when she searches endlessly for the locket she buried during her first trip to New York, when she promised herself that she would dig it up when she got married. Her scary dad makes a guest appearance and bonds with Barney over laser tag.  I forgot how much I loved these two together.

These two are too preoccupied to help out Robin in her time of need. I kind of get it; it is a pretty pressing game of laser tag. Enter Ted. Of course, as usual, Ted is second string on Robin’s roster of whipped men. I get that they’re friends, but I feel like Ted is constantly at her beck and call, even after she broke his heart. Ted is a sad, sad masochist. They share a few philosophical thoughts on the universe, Robin shares her pre-marriage weariness and they finally find the necklace - except that it is only the box with the necklace missing. This I cannot wrap my head around, so we’ll wait to see where that one goes.

That’s all for this week, tune in Monday at 8pm on CBS for the next episode!
