Girl Power #TBT playlist

Let's venture back to the days of Walkmans, Sketchers and unfortunate hairdos. Ohh, the '90s (and early 2000s). As I look back at myself and the music I listened to, I’m thinking: that was unfortunate.

But let’s put that hatin’ aside for a moment, and enjoy some interesting  (and what my 10-year-old self would call AWESOME) music. In the '90s and early 2000s, I was all about the girl power. Luckily for me, there were tons of girl groups and solo acts out there to fuel my obsession.  I was listening to everything from the pop princess Britney to one-hit wonders like B*Witched.

So sit back, relax and let the crimped hair and questionable fashion choices set in.  Yes, these were cringe-worthy times…but we still had some JAMZ.

10. B*Witched- C’est La Vie

Honestly, this is the only B*Witched song I’ve ever heard of, but these ladies made their mark. One listen, and it’ll be in your head all day. This song is everything '90s. We’ve got everything from a catchy beat and synchronized dance moves to a blonde girl with cornrows. Does it get any better than this? Amazingly, yes, it does.

9. t.A.T.u – All The Things She Said

Okay, I’m putting this on the list because it was considered so incredibly scandalous back in the day; it features two girls making out. I remember it was all people talked about for a week, and my mom refused to let me watch it. Anyway, both the video and the song are just extremely creepy. Also, I’m not even going to try to speculate about what the band name means or why it is spelled that way.

8. 3LW- No More (Baby I’ma Do  Right)

This is another group that disappeared (after two songs) but they gave us a couple of killer girl power hits. Okay, does anyone else recognize multiple members of the Cheetah Girls in this group…or am I really that weird?  Anyway, this is a good song to listen to if you want to get some bad attitude in your life, or maybe you're mad at some dude and want a laugh. ALSO, please do not overlook the rap at the 2:20 mark.

7. Play- Us Against The World

First of all, these girls are legitimately 5 years old. They look like real-life Bratz dolls. Also, I’m not really sure what this  music video is about but there are ninjas involved so I’m into it.  I vaguely remember making up a dance to this with my friends and possibly recording it....classic.

6. Mandy Moore- Candy

I almost forgot Mandy Moore once had a musical career or even still existed. But you gotta love her. Especially before they gave her what weird Britney-esque transformation and tried to make her “sexy.”  Lovin' the green beetle that she’s rolling around in.

5. Shania Twain- Man! I Feel Like A Woman

So, Shania might be in a different league than the rest of these women, but I had to put her on the playlist. Honestly, if you haven’t had a sing-a-long to this with your friends, you haven’t lived. NOT KIDDING. Blast it and let it all out.

4. Spice Girls- Wannabe

I think this pretty much speaks for itself. I mean, come on, they are the Spice Girls. If you didn’t like them or feel some sort of strong emotion for them, at some point, you aren’t a real person.  As a young girl, my goal in life was to become a Spice Girl. I will not disclose whether or not this has changed. I SEE YOU VICTORIA “POSH SPICE” BECKHAM.

3. Destiny’s Child- Bootylicious

I’m forever grateful to Destiny’s Child for introducing Beyonce to the world. What would I do without her? But seriously, these ladies produced some classics, and still do today.

2. Christina Aguilera- Come on Over (All I Want Is You)

I forgot that Xtina was once young and fresh….and didn’t look like a ghostly geisha. But here she is!  This was after her bad-girl make over, and girl’s pulling it off. Also, this song is literally ingrained in my brain because I was once forced to memorize the Spanish version. But, it never gets old.

1. Britney Spears- Baby One More Time

ALL HAIL THE PRINCESS OF POP. From her days as America’s sweetheart to the more scandalous days of “Toxic” and shaved heads, Britney has done it all. And the girl does it big. I can say with pride that her music was the soundtrack of my youth. AND she’s still going for it. Haters gonna hate Britney. You’ll always have a special place in my heart.
